When it comes to pain, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out what is serious, what might be passing, and what needs medical treatment. At NewSouth NeuroSpine, we can help determine the source of your pain and set out a plan of treatment. One of the common causes of pain that tends to radiate from the back or buttocks, through the legs, and even down to the feet, is sciatica.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that is usually caused by nerve compression or irritation in the bundle of nerves found just outside the spine, called the plexus. There are a number of things that can cause sciatica, as well as a wide range of pain types a patient can experience. It can range from numbness and weakness of the legs, all the way to severe pain that causes sitting or standing to be difficult. Common causes of sciatica include a slipped or herniated disc, muscle spasms within the buttocks, the narrowing of the spinal canal, also referred to as spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis, which occurs when a vertebra slips out of line with the one above it.

How Can My Sciatica Be Diagnosed And Treated?

NewSouth NeuroSpine has experienced physicians, diagnostic tools, and staff that will help determine what is causing your pain. Sciatica is usually diagnosed through a physical exam that may include an MRI or CT Scan. Sciatica can sometimes improve on its own with little intervention within a month or two. If it doesn’t improve, or if it is severe and causing an interruption to your daily life, we can also offer physical therapy, medication, activity modifications, and if needed, surgery. NewSouth NeuroSpine offers a full range of services, from diagnostics to treatment options. We are able to provide solutions to all of our patients based on their individual needs.
